Harstad Arts is pleased to present our first ‘on the walls’ exhibit since March of 2020. Featured is digital art created by the late Carleton Wing (he died in early April of 2020 of complications from COVID). Wing’s last exhibit included a group of works called ‘Guardian Angels.’ In his artist’s statement, Wing announced: “I have personal experiences of being comforted by angels.” This, no doubt, provided inspiration for this creation of these digital collages which are based on a collection of tintypes gathered by Wing. Each guardian angel is outfitted with accessories appropriate for different occupations or callings. Take some time to investigate this for yourself! You will find eleven Guardian Angels in the Gathering Area at Faith Lutheran.
Also on view are four mandalas, likewise created digitally. ‘Mandala’ is the Sanskrit word for ‘circle’ and mandalas were originally used by Buddhists and Hindus for meditative purposes. The use of mandalas has spread more generally across religion, geography, and purpose. Carleton Wing considered his mandala series to be secular. You may find his mandalas on the transept walls. See what meditations they may provoke in you.
